Beagles and Children
Well bred and socialized Beagles are said to be great around children. They love to play and their sturdy build makes them durable. The only concern is the Beagles protection of its food makes it important for children not to tease or invade the space of a Beagle that's eating. Personal Note: While always done with love, our Beagle Ramos has endured a lot of playful teasing through the years and has always been a good sport. Whether its dressing her up in clothes or tickling her, Ramos has always responded with good cheer and a wagging tail.

A Beagles Role in the Family
Since Beagles are pack animals they fit right into a family structure rather easily. Beagles also possess a friendly and loving personality and adjust to new settings and situations easily. Personal Note: Ramos is an inside/outside dog. However, as she's gotten older, she wants to be inside a lot more. Whatever room the family is in, that's where Ramos wants to be. That is especially true when we're in the kitchen. Ramos rarely dotes on us unless we're eating.

Follow the Nose
Bruce Springsteen might have had a common Beagles trait in mind when he first sang, "Born to Run." While many dogs will characteristically stay next to the house and/or family members when outside, don't count on a Beagle to do that. Beagles must be kept on a leash or fenced in because if they catch a scent, they'll take off without a thought. Tracking down a roaming Beagle can be a daunting task. They normally don't give up on the scent until they are exhausted. Personal Note: I have developed new cuss words in my searches for Ramos through the years. I've tried every trick I know to try to get her to come back to the house on my terms. However, she usually just came home when she was ready.

Boot, Scoot and Boogie
While a Beagle dragging its rear across the carpet certainly has a certain humorous appeal, the actual cause for this behavior trait is no laughing manner. Booty dragging is a sign that a dog's anal glands may be full. If the problem doesn't rectify itself, a vet can express the glands and brave souls can learn how to do the task themselves. Personal Note: Our Beagle Ramos is famous for this. When she starts her slide, I laugh in delight. and our girls cheer Mom....well she freaks and demands that the dog is sent to the back yard.

"Crappy" Snacks
Unfortunately, many (not all) Beagles seem to find dog and cat feces attractive appetizers. This taints the thought of what the next friendly lick from your Beagle may contain. Beagle pundits have speculated that it's the Beagles' strong nose and the rich food they're often fed.
A Solution: It has been suggested that mixing in a small amount of small pellet-style rabbit food in with your Beagle's dish may solve this problem.

Baywatch
A somewhat annoying Beagle trait is how they are known to bark, bay and howl. Some beagles bark with great enthusiasm while others are more laid back. Typical bark-starters include a stranger at the door, or the picking up of an intriguing scent while they're outside. These excited barks can also turn into the famous Beagle baying. While Beagles have been know to bark and or howl when left alone for long periods of time, Beagles aren't regarded as nuisance barkers. Because of the Beagles hunting history, breeders purposely bred howling and baying characteristics into the breed. While out of sight of their rabbit chasing beagles, the baying and howling allows the hunters to stay in auditory contact with the hunting dogs at all times.

Shedding and Smells
Although Beagles have short hair, they do some light shedding (nothing like a Golden Retriever).
Beagles are also know to possess a distinctive hound odor at times.
