Beagle Facts including Size, Grooming Needs and More
Although beagle-type dogs have existed for over 2,000 years, the modern breed was developed in Great
Britain around the 1830s.  The mixing of several breeds are credited for playing a role in the development of
the Beagle breed, including the Talbot Hound, the North Country Beagle, the Southern Hound, and possibly
the Harrier

These Beagle traits include all shades and
combinations of white (or cream), black,
tan/lemon/red, brown/liver, blue/grey, and the colors
of the hare or badger. The color combination which
most people associate with a Beagle is the black,
tan & white tricolor, with a black saddle marking,
and white occurring in an "Irish spotting" pattern on
the face, neck, legs and tail tip.
Beagle Grooming

The short coat characteristic of Beagles requires little
grooming.  Beagles shed moderately, but at least
they have short hair.  Female Beagles shed after
each season and males usually shed once a year.
The primary grooming concern for Beagles is their
long ears, which is a great host for ear mites and
infections.  Regular checkups and cleanings are a
must.
Beagle's Bark

Very distinctive may be an understatement when
describing a Beagle's bark. When they are on the
hunt or extra excited, a Beagle's bark turns into a bay
or howl.  This vocalizing may be an important
consideration when selecting a breed.  While
Beagles often bark at the arrival of a house guest or
the sighting of another animal, Beagles are not
classified as nuiscance barkers.
Ain't Nothin' but a Hound Dog

When Elvis sang "You ain't ever caught a rabbit and
you ain't no friend of mine." it was very likely Beagles
he was singing about.  And of course, I'm sure that
Elvis actually loved Beagles.  Who couldn't?

Beagles are scent hounds and have a keen sense of
smell.  Although Beagles were originally bred for the
purpose of tracking down deer and rabbits, they have
also enjoyed a more recent transition to hunting table
scraps as a welcomed family member.
